What every law aspirant should know
Law Admission Test (LAT)
Conducted by HEC's Education Testing Council (ETC) for admission to 5-year LLB at HEC/PBC-recognised institutions. 100 marks: essay, personal statement and MCQs (English, GK, Islamic/Pakistan Studies, Urdu, basic maths). Passing score: 50%. Open to HSSC/Grade 12 holders and those awaiting results. HEC scheduled three LAT sessions in 2026 (May, July, October). Fee and certificate validity: not verified.
5-year LLB eligibility
Intermediate (HSSC/A-Level or IBCC equivalent) plus LAT pass (50%). Minimum intermediate marks vary by institution: UMT states 45%; University of the Punjab (University Law College) requires 55% and an upper age limit of 24 plus its own entry test. Treat 45% as the commonly cited floor (unverified as a uniform PBC rule).
3-year LLB discontinued
Supreme Court of Pakistan, Pakistan Bar Council v. Federal Government (Const. P. 134/2012), judgment of 31-08-2018: admissions to 3-year LLB banned with effect from 31-12-2018; 5-year LLB mandated; LAT introduced; Law-GAT restored. Some directories still list 3-year LLB at older colleges — these are legacy listings.
LLM
Postgraduate master's in law; typically 2 years (4 semesters) after LLB in Pakistan (duration generalised; varies by university). Offered by e.g. University of the Punjab, IIUI, Karachi, Sindh, BZU, Peshawar, Hamdard, UMT, UoL, Bahria.
PhD / MPhil Law
Doctoral programmes in law are offered by a smaller set of universities (e.g. University of the Punjab, IIUI — PhD Law and PhD Shariah, Karachi, Sindh, BZU, Peshawar, Hamdard). Usually require LLM/MPhil (18 years of education) plus HEC-approved entry test (unverified per-university).
Diplomas
University of the Punjab Faculty of Law runs diploma classes in Taxation, Labour Law, Intellectual Property and Environmental Law (e.g. Diploma in Taxation Law, Evening). GCU Lahore and University of Sargodha also list diplomas in Taxation Law; University of Okara and Superior list postgraduate diplomas in Taxation Law.
Law-GAT (Law Graduate Assessment Test)
Conducted by HEC; mandatory for enrolment as an advocate with a Bar Council (restored by the Supreme Court in 2018). 100 MCQs on Constitutional Law, Jurisprudence, CPC, Criminal Law, Law of Evidence and Professional Ethics. Passing score: 50%. Eligibility: LLB from HEC/PBC-recognised university. Registration fee was Rs. 3,000 (2023; may have changed).
Enrolment as Advocate (lower courts)
After LLB: submit intimation to the provincial Bar Council, complete 6 months' pupillage with a senior advocate (assist in at least 10 cases), pass Law-GAT, then the Bar Council's enrolment examination/interview (viva). Enrolment is with the provincial Bar Council (Punjab, Sindh, KP, Balochistan, Islamabad).
Higher licences
Advocate High Court: after 2 years' practice in subordinate courts (plus Bar Council process). Advocate Supreme Court: after 7 years as Advocate High Court. Senior ASC: 15 years in the Supreme Court (per secondary source; verify against PBC Rules).
